Amrita Prakash Biography (Hindi, Malayalam)
Amrita Prakash is an Indian film actress and model who has acted in both Bollywood and Malayalam films. She started her career as a Child Artisté at the age of 4. Since then she has appeared in several television commercials, print ads, television shows- both fiction and non-fiction.
In the span of her career she has appeared in over 50 television commercials, several television shows and movies. She is still remembered for her vivacious anchoring on the first reality show for Kids- Fox Kids which she anchored on Star Plus for over 5 years under the character name Miss India. She later went on to anchor India's first reality show Kya Masti Kya Dhoom, also on Star Plus alongside popular Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre.
She became India's little sweetheart when she played the endearing character of Milli in Anubhav Sinha's Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahaan at the age of 12. She was nominated for several Best Child Astisté awards during the time and it opened new avenues for her on the big screen.
In her teens she played the leading role of rebel Sanskriti Thakral in Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai on Zee TV in 2008, until she quit the show reporting the character was not progressing as per the script.
Her most critically acclaimed role has been her Malayalam film. The path- breaking Manjupoloru Penkutty directed by veteran Kamal. The film shocked it's audiences with it's story and treatment that revolved around a 16year old girl Nidhi who was being molested by her step-father and plots to murder him. Amrita Prakash's performance was critically acclaimed, earning her the love and adulation of a new industry and several Award nominations, including the very prestigious National State Awards in the Best Actress Category - competing with actors and films from every industry in the Country- making her one of the youngest actors to ever be nominated in this category.
Soon after, she made most of her pivotal role- playing the character of Choti in Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah making a mark with her powerful performance alongside veteran actors like Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao, Anupam Kher, Seema Biswas amongst others. Her performance in Vivah earned her nominations including the Star Dust Award for Best Supporting Role -thereby announcing her arrival from child artisté to parallel leads.
Post Vivah she was included in the Rajshri Films group and they went on to work with her again on Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi.
She decided to not do television after her big break in Vivah. She has since then anchored reality shows for television and worked in regional and commercial cinema, standing by her decision to quit mainstream television fiction shows.
On declaring her decision to quit television she was quoted saying "I love the television Industry, it was where I began. It's where my roots are. But for now, I want to dream, experiment and explore. Maybe I will return to television someday. But right now, I look forward to challenging myself and diving head-first into the unknown".
Her father. Dr. Prakash Bakshi is the current Chairman of NABARD She holds a Masters Degree from the University of Mumbai.
